Harambee Christian Family Center INC is Hiring a Youth Advocate Near Pasadena, CA

Harambee Youth Advocate Hours
An Average of 20-30 hours per week.

Position Overview:
We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Youth Advocates to join our dynamic team in an educational, fun, and inclusive after school program. As a Youth Advocate, you will play a crucial role in creating a safe and engaging environment for children to learn, grow, and explore their passions outside of regular school hours. Advocates are also expected to engage scholars in academically engaging activities to ensure that they are performing at the highest level possible. Under the guidance of the Site Coordinator, who serves as the team lead, you will be responsible for fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere, encouraging creativity, and promoting social and emotional development among program participants.
Responsibilities:
1. Mentorship and Guidance: Establish positive and supportive relationships with students, acting as a mentor and advocate for their personal and academic growth. Encourage and assist students in setting and achieving individual educational and personal goals. Provide guidance in decision-making, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
2. Facilitating Educational Activities: Develop and implement educational and interactive activities that align with the program's goals and curriculum. Foster a love of learning by making educational sessions engaging, fun, and relatable to students' interests and experiences. Collaborate with other Youth Advocates and Site Coordinator to design well-rounded and diverse learning experiences.
3. Inclusivity and Diversity: Promote an inclusive and welcoming environment where students of all backgrounds feel respected and valued. Celebrate diversity and encourage cultural exchange among participants through activities and discussions (ex. Foster healthy and engaging discussions around the history and contributions of different cultures during the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, etc.). Ensure that the program is accessible and accommodating to all students, including those with special needs.
4. Program Monitoring and Safety: Monitor students during program hours to maintain a safe and secure environment. Present a space for clarity surrounding program rules and policies consistently and fairly, applying appropriate disciplinary measures when
necessary. Incorporate activities that implement engagement and agreement around the idea of “rules and expectations.” Address any behavioral issues promptly and professionally, seeking support from the Site Coordinator when necessary.
5. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with the Site Coordinator and other team members to plan and coordinate program activities. Collaborate with the Site Coordinator to implement safety protocols and emergency procedures. Attend regular staff meetings and training sessions to stay updated on program objectives and best practices. Communicate effectively with parents/guardians to keep them informed about students' progress and program activities.
Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education, child development, or related fields is a plus.
  • Experience working with children in educational, recreational, or community-based settings.

Passion for youth development, education, and creating positive change in young lives. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect and engage with diverse groups of students and families.

  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player and collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

Understanding of the importance of inclusivity and cultural sensitivity in programming. Flexibility and adaptability to adjust program activities based on students' interests and needs.
